Job Summary:
The Crisis Intervention Counselor is responsible for providing immediate and direct crisis intervention services to individuals and families experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health crises. The counselor will assess the immediate needs of clients, develop crisis management plans, and provide supportive counseling to promote emotional well-being and stability. This position requires a strong ability to work in high-stress situations, providing effective crisis intervention and ensuring the safety and welfare of clients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Respond promptly and effectively to crisis situations, providing immediate support and intervention to individuals experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health crises.
2. Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' needs, including evaluating their immediate safety and risk factors.
3. Develop individualized crisis management plans in collaboration with clients, focusing on de-escalation techniques and coping strategies.
4. Provide crisis counseling and emotional support to individuals and families, promoting resilience and fostering a sense of empowerment.
5. Offer referrals to appropriate community resources and services, ensuring clients receive ongoing support beyond crisis intervention.
6. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including law enforcement, medical professionals, and social service agencies, to facilitate coordinated care for clients.
7. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of client interactions, assessments, crisis plans, and referrals in accordance with organizational policies and legal requirements.
8. Participate in regular supervision, team meetings, and professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills in crisis intervention techniques.
9. Adhere to ethical guidelines and professional standards in all interactions with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
10. Stay informed about current research, best practices, and trends in crisis intervention and related fields.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Valid state licensure or certification as a Mental Health Counselor, Social Worker, or related professional (e.g., Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor).
3. Proven experience in crisis intervention, preferably in a social work or mental health setting.
4. Ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress situations, demonstrating strong crisis management and decision-making skills.
5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build trusting relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds.
6. Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and interventions.
7. Familiarity with community resources and referral networks for mental health and social services.
8. Proficiency in using electronic health records and other relevant software applications.
9. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and respecting clients' rights to privacy.
10. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
